Wednesday, 1 July 2009

The second annual St Mary’s Got Talent extravaganza was held on Thursday 11 June in the Lady Wardle Performing Arts Centre. The evening was an outstanding success, and highlighted the diverse range of talents the students of St Mary’s have to offer.

Throughout the evening, a packed auditorium was treated to an extremely varied range of performances which included solo singers, bands, pianists, flutists and the now infamous Cat/Dog team, which has quickly found its way into St Mary’s legend.

The evening was hosted in a very entertaining manner by Vincenzo Perrella, and the contestants were ably judged by David Redding, Suad Majrouh and Lucy Clare. A new addition to this year’s presentation were the audition tapes of acts that didn’t quite fit the criteria for the live performance, which definitely added a comical touch to the evening.

The judges definitely had a tough decision on their hands, as the quality of performances was sensational, and the crowd responded to every contestant with warmth and admiration. The winner on the night was Cairo, Year 8, whose amazing aerobic gymnastics routine was met with a standing ovation from the audience. Stephanie, Year 11, was runner-up with her beautiful solo singing performance, and third place went to a duo of Holly,Year 10, and Atara,Year 8, for their hugely entertaining duet performance of ‘Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better’.

The evening raised over $1800, and all proceeds from the ticket sales will go to PACT India, which is an organisation that helps underprivileged girls gain access to educational resources in various parts of India. Thank you to all the fantastic contestants, and to everyone who came along and took part in this very enjoyable evening.
