Year 1 heralds the girls’ movement into the more structured area of the Junior School with full uniforms, timetables, chairs and desks. Their excitement about learning, reading and playing is carefully nurtured as they enjoy the challenges of research and sharing their learning with their friends amongst the challenges of the expanded specialist programme. Ballet, swimming and the Perceptual Motor Programme become highlights of their physical education programme.
Year 2 sees the girls become even more independent as individuals and as learners. These students have the opportunity to participate in the strings programme offering tuition in the violin or cello and also of making music with their friends in the Beginners’ String Ensemble.
Year 3 and Year 4 girls move out of the Junior Primary area and nearer to the older students as they look towards maturing as independent learners. The girls have lessons with specialist staff teaching Italian, Library Studies, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education.
Year 4 students enjoy the enrichment of the specialist Art Programme and their first taste of interschool sporting events. An important aspect of the students' development is the maintenance of the nurturing pastoral environment that adjusts effectively to their differing developmental needs, ensuring that they are given every support as they progress along their learning journey.
Year 5 girls have the privilege of welcoming a whole new class of girls. The pastoral programme commences at the beginning of the year with a Getting-to-Know-You week of activities specifically designed to integrate the girls. It is an important year for the establishment of significant new friendships. Year 5 also heralds the beginning of Interschool sporting activities as the girls venture outside the immediate school environment. The continuing journey to independence increases as the girls take greater responsibility for their own learning.
Year 6 girls have the opportunity to build their personal confidence through the Public Speaking programme and the excitement of the annual Year 6 production. This spectacle involves every Year 6 student in a performance of a drama, supporting and reinforcing a topic from their Health curriculum area.
In Years 5 and 6 the girls are introduced to Outdoor Education activities through year based residential camps. The camps place great emphasis on team building, problem solving and collaborative activities.
The learning programme for Year 5 and 6 students is exciting and challenging with specialist teachers in Art, Music, Drama, Physical Education, Health, Italian, Library Research and Literature and Religious Education complementing the classroom programme of core curriculum areas. By the final term in Year 6, girls have been prepared to elect some of their student leaders for the following year.
