Years 9 and 10

St Mary's offers students the option of studying a range of design courses.

Construct and Innovate

Year 9 and 10 students acquire joinery, carving and sculptural techniques as they design and study the production of small furniture items, sculpture and jewellery.

Graphic Design and Fashion Illustration

Year 9 and 10 students learn hands on techniques in the creation of fashion sketching and design, book illustration and graphic design. The tasks are designed to have a future vocational application.

Technical Drawing

Year 9 and 10 students learn how to produce a range of products with drawing instruments and computers. This course is particularly relevant to those interested in pursuing a career in Design, Architecture, Engineering and Commercial Art.

Information Technology Graphic Design

Year 10 students learn to use Photoshop, Logo, Freehand and Dreamweaver as they develop their technology skills. This course is particularly relevant for students interested in Art and Graphic Design.


Years 11 and 12

Materials Design and Technology is offered as an examinable subject in Year 12. Students acquire high level sewing skills and techniques and the use of machinery and equipment in the manufacture of garments and other textile items. The course is relevant to students who wish to pursue employment or further studies in fashion design, interior design and the textile, clothing and footwear industries.
