The Drama Department is a hub of vibrancy, creativity and energy. It offers courses for students from Years 8 to 12 and a busy extra-curricular programme with opportunities to perform throughout the year in our state-of-the-art facility, The Lady Wardle Performing Arts Centre.
Drama classes cater for a wide range of students, satisfying the need for a creative outlet and an opportunity to experience a wide variety of theatre both on and off stage. The ability to communicate orally and physically is a key life skill.
Year 8 students are introduced to Drama in courses which aim to develop self-confidence and communication skills. Students learn how to appreciate drama and express themselves through mime, improvisation and playbuilding. In Years 9 and 10, students have an opportunity to develop acting skills, explore theatre genres, perform scripted scenes from selected plays, discover how to create realistic characters and learn how to use the stage space. At the end of the year, classes create original dramas that are performed in the Performing Arts Centre to invited audiences.
A Year 10 Offstage elective is for students who, rather than being in the spotlight, would like to know how to operate the spotlight. Whilst learning about theatre lighting and sound, stage management, set and costume design and construction the girls put their skills into practice working on various performances, staged in the Performing Arts Centre, throughout the year.
Year 11 and 12 students have the option of studying Drama as a Tertiary Entrance subject. As well as further developing foundation skills, the emphasis is on the practice of theatre arising from students involvement in acting, directing, writing, design and management. Year 12 the girls perform a range of monologues for their Tertiary Entrance external exam.
Each year, students are invited to audition for the School Production. Click here for further information about this year's show, The Boyfriend.
