When studying Mathematics, students learn to use the concepts of number, measurement, chance and data, space and algebra to describe and understand their social and physical world.

Mathematics teaches students to become observant, interpret results and to draw general conclusions, all skills that are required in every day life. The Mathematics Department seeks to foster inquiring minds and enhance the students' appreciation of the many benefits of studying Mathematics.

There is a programme of activities for students gifted in Mathematics.

Years 8, 9 and 10

Mathematics is a compulsory subject in Years 8 to 10. Classes are organised in order to group students of similar ability.

Years 11 and 12

In Years 11 and 12, students can choose an appropriate Mathematics subject relative to their capabilities and interests. In Years 11 and 12 we offer

  • Introductory Calculus (Year 11)
  • Geometry and Trigonometry (Year 11)
  • Foundations of Mathematics (Year 11)
  • Mathematics in Practice (Year 11)
  • Applicable Mathematics (Year 12, Tertiary Entrance Scoring Subject)
  • Calculus (Year 12, Tertiary Entrance Scoring Subject)
  • Discrete Mathematics (Year 12, Tertiary Entrance Scoring Subject)
  • Modelling with Mathematics (Year 12, Wholly School Assessed subject)
Although Mathematics is not compulsory in Years 11 and 12, there are very few students who do not choose to further their mathematical knowledge. We are very proud of this, as concern is often raised in the broader community that girls are not studying subjects in the Science/Mathematics fields in their latter years of schooling.
