Health Education is compulsory for all students in Years 8, 9 and 10. It is a developmental programme in which concepts relating to community and environmental health, mental, emotional, physical and societal health are developed.
All Year 9 students take the Thinking, Learning, Caring course in which they are introduced to or fine tune their skills in areas such as memory strategies, mind mapping, visual learning techniques, problem solving, philosophy and thinking skills.
In Years 9 and 10 students can choose to study Personal Development. Students develop the skills and confidence for successful family, social and vocational relationships. Topics covered are: self-esteem, conflict resolution, etiquette - social skills for functions and formal occasions, nutrition requirements for healthy bodies, skin and body care, and relaxation techniques.
This Wholly School Assessed course gives students an insight into responsible care giving and parenting, and serves as a sound introduction to employment opportunities in childcare-related careers as well as for further studies in teaching, nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The students participate in a programme with pre-school children from the Peter Arney Learning Centre and a number of visits and guest speakers are organised to provide practical experiences. They organise and run a playgroup for three and four year old children and participate in excursions to look at community support facilities and services for children.
Independent Living is a Wholly School Assessed subject which focusses on personal management of lifestyle needs and options beyond school. There is a solid core of practical food preparation activities which will provide knowledge as well as technical and management skills in areas of menu planning, food preparation and presentation for various occasions both private and commercial. Students also establish and manage a small business enterprise.
