Biology extends our knowledge of the living world through the study of a wide range of related subjects from plants, animals and microbiology to genetics, biochemistry, ecology and physiology. Biology also encompasses a wide range of scientific activity.
In Years 11 and 12 two Biology courses are offered.
Biology is a Tertiary Entrance Scoring subject and is highly recommended for students who wish to follow a career in areas such as medicine, botany, zoology, physiology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, agriculture, psychology, anthropology, environmental sciences, law or geology.
The course provides a background to many issues of public concern, including reproductive and molecular biology, pollution and environmental management and conservation.
The process skills of science, which are fundamental to the spirit of enquiry and methods of investigations that lead to the growth of scientific knowledge, are developed in the practical components of the course.
Human Biology is the scientific study of humans as individuals and as populations. It encompasses the study of the structure and function of the body, the human life cycle, the biological and cultural evolution of humans, human ecology and modern social issues.
Human Biology is a Tertiary Entrance Scoring subject and provides opportunities to develop competence in the process and manipulative skills of science. Designing and carrying out controlled experiments, collecting, recording and interpreting data and administering basic first aid are all included in the practical work.
Human Biology is valuable preparation for tertiary courses such as medicine, dentistry, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and hearing science, nursing, human biology, human physical performance, human movement and recreation studies and education.
