All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 are involved in a range of music activities. The music specialist offers learning experiences where the students perform, compose and analyse music and movement.
The specialist music programme in the Junior School begins in the Kindergarten and continues to Year 6. It is a structured, sequential, Kodaly based programme, which recognises singing as the most direct path to a successful musical education. The main aim of the music programme is for each child to experience and enjoy as many different types of active music making as possible, both in class and ensembles.
All students from Year 1 - 6 participate in their year group choir as part of the music timetable, culminating in performances at Music Night and Presentation Night. There is also an auditioned choir (4/5/6 Chorale) open to girls in Years 4 - 6 which provides the opportunity to sing more difficult repertoire and focus more specifically on vocal technique.
Students in Year 2 have the opportunity to learn a string instrument free of charge for one semester and participate in a string ensemble for the year. As string players advance they are able to join the Giocoso Strings (Years 1 - 4) , the Academy Strings (Years 4 - 6) and may also participate in chamber music ensembles.
Students in Year 5 have the opportunity to learn a concert band instrument free of charge and participate in the Year 5 Beginner Band. As wind, brass and percussion students advance they are able to join the Junior School Concert Band.
