Business of the Month - Fit Chicks WA

Old Girl and former St Mary’s Junior School teacher, Lexi Meeke (’99), developed her business to fill a gap in the market. She was searching for a fitness group that suited her lifestyle but when she couldn’t find it, she developed Fit Chicks WA.
Tell us about your business and how it began.
Fitness became a passion of mine after my son was born and I've relied on regular exercise to help balance the pressures of my corporate job and single parenting. My weight fluctuated a lot over the years for various reasons and I was on the lookout for something that would really suit my busy lifestyle, provide a family-friendly environment for my son and help me keep my life in balance (and lose some weight). When I couldn’t find it, I decided to create it!
What was your biggest break getting into this business?
The biggest break was timing. I had planned this business for a very long time and within two weeks of getting started with the development, I managed to secure two fantastic trainers who have previously helped me with my fitness goals. They are now a key part of the Fit Chicks WA business and we have formed a true family and community environment that also delivers wonderful fitness results.
What makes your business special, unique, or different?
So many things!
- We offer a balanced workout, in a top location, with multiple class options for less cost than all of our competitors.
- We have three membership options to cater for everyone.
- Our members are all so supportive of each other and we are a community of like-minded women building each other up.
- We know you'll love our classes so we don't lock you into a contract like a gym or other bootcamp might.
- Children are welcome at our outdoor classes (because we know how busy life as a mum can be, and we also love that our classes model healthy living to our children too). *No additional supervision provided for children, though there is plenty for them to do outdoors.
- Our class times suit those working as well as those who don’t. Times are scheduled around school drop-offs and pick-ups as well as early morning, evening and weekend classes.
- My corporate experience allows me to efficiently run the business and I attend at least four classes a week as a member. This means I personally know all the members and deliver a superior service.
- We set all our boxing to really funky music ... if it’s a song that gets you on the dance floor, it’s a song we are boxing to.
- We laugh while we train, and we sparkle while we sweat!
What is the best business advice you have ever been given?
I'm sure this will continue to change as Fit Chicks WA continues to grow, though to date it would have to be 'If you can find a way to do what you love, you will never work a day in your life’ and ‘never, ever give up’.
