Year 1 - ‘Discover the Possibilities’
Beginning new challenges, building friendships and strong minds, help our girls to become lifelong problem solvers. Year 1 at St Mary’s is all about your little girl, taking those first few steps of independence with her teachers right by her side. We want to instil in every girl a sense of wonder and excitement and develop their self-confidence, their imagination and their spirit of adventure.
We provide a motivating and differentiated programme that meets the academic needs of all girls, with a strong emphasis on numeracy and literacy. A balance of structured, deliberate teaching and discovery through play, allows each girl to reach her potential. Our STEM programme takes us into the Science laboratory every week where students conduct hands-on experiments with our Scientist in Residence. Other specialist lessons include Religion, Physical Education (including swimming lessons), Music and Enrichment Programmes.
Our indoor and outdoor learning environment provides opportunities to learn through play, ponder the possibilities, investigate and inquire in meaningful and purposeful situations. Our neighbouring bushland enables us to regularly take our classroom into its natural environment to enhance and build our girls’ character capabilities — such as self-regulation, resilience, creativity, and innovation. Our bright, welcoming classrooms also provide a safe setting for every girl to feel part of our Year 1 community.
