The Commissioning of Fr Gift
POSTED April 23 2026 , News
Our community has marked an important milestone with a Commissioning Service for our new Chaplain, The Reverend Dr Gift Makwasha (Fr Gift).

The service was attended by students from Years 5 to 12 and was led by The Right Reverend Bishop Hans, Assistant Bishop of Perth. We were honoured to welcome visiting clergy, members of the Board of Governors, and students and staff from Fr Gift’s former school, St George’s Anglican Grammar School. Members of Fr Gift’s family were also present, including his eldest daughter, Gamu, an Old Girl from the Class of 2019. It was a pleasure to reconnect with her and acknowledge her family’s ongoing connection with our School.
In his sermon, Bishop Hans spoke of Fr Gift’s warm and compassionate nature, highlighting his deep commitment to pastoral care and service.
“Not only does his name suggest that he is a gift, but Fr Gift also brings many gifts with him into this new season of his ministry among you. Chiefly among his many gifts is his care for all the people he ministers to. I know that Fr Gift will be totally committed to every single one of you.”
The Eucharist underscored the faith‑based values that underpin life at St Mary’s and affirmed the vital role of chaplaincy in nurturing pastoral care, faith and service within our community.
The service also provided an opportunity to farewell Fr Richard Pengelley, who has served the School with dedication and generosity. We thank him sincerely for his pastoral leadership and the care he has shown to our students and staff, and we offer him every blessing as he returns to retirement.
We look forward to Fr Gift’s ministry at St Mary’s and to the guidance, care and presence he will bring to our community.
