Portia wins prestigious portraiture award

On behalf of the entire St Mary’s community, we wish to congratulate Year 11 student, Portia, who was last night announced as the winner of the Years 9 to 10 category at the 2023 Lester Prize Youth Awards!

Portia impressed the judging panel with her powerful depiction of her sibling, Lee, modelling a Wearable Art costume they crated during their time at St Mary’s.

Her eye-catching portrait, entitled Revisiting Heritage, will be exhibited to the public at the WA Museum Boola Bardip until 16 July.

St Mary’s Class of 2022 graduate Nathalie Chan’s artwork, Heritage, which was in the running to win the Years 11 to 12 category, will also feature in the exhibit.

Nathalie’s stunning piece sought to explore her hybrid cultural identity as a Chinese second-generation immigrant in Australia by mixing imagery of Perth’s iconic black swans and photos from her childhood.
