In Years 7 and 8, students participate in a year-long programme covering Visual Arts and Design.
St Mary's students have achieved outstanding results over the past decade in Visual Arts ATAR. In the Visual Arts course, students engage in traditional, modern and contemporary media and techniques within the broad areas of art forms.
General Visual Arts and Certificate II in Visual Arts (VET)
The General Visual Arts course is embedded in the VET Certificate II in Visual Arts, allowing students to complete two qualifications in one and to produce a rich and varied visual electronic portfolio for tertiary entrance.
Certificate III in Design Fundamentals (VET)
The Certificate III in Design Fundamentals course will introduce students to the creative world of graphic, interior and product design, architecture, illustration and computer-aided drawing (CADD).
Year 9 and 10 Electives
Visual Arts and Design are elective subjects in Years 9 and 10, and include opportunities for students to specialise in their art studies, with the option of participating in the Visual Arts, including Extension, Fashion and Graphics, or Construct and Innovate programmes.
Visual Arts Extended
Students concentrate on extending their practical (two- and three-dimensional) and written skills, with a view to being more self-directed in their inquiry and artwork.
Construct and Innovate
Students acquire design, construction and sculptural techniques as they study and construct small three-dimensional objects, architecture and interior design projects and jewellery.
Fashion and Graphics
Students learn hands-on techniques in fashion and graphic design, including the use of digital technologies, as well as practical textiles-related processes.
Wearable Art
An extracurricular programme for students in Years 9 to 12, girls are involved in designing, constructing and parading their costumes.
Artist Workshops
Artist workshops and excursions are compulsory for Year 12 WACE students.
Art Club for Years 7 and 8
An after-school club designed for younger students keen to form friendships and learn about the Visual Arts in an extracurricular context.
