Welcome to Smagstown: A town built by our Year 4s
POSTED July 17 2025 , Junior School, News, Parents & Community
Our Year 4 students have been learning all about local governments, and as part of that learning, they worked together to build Smagstown!
Smagstown is a bustling, student-designed town centre complete with hospitals, airports, fire departments, cafés, grocery stores and more. Of course, no town built by nine and 10-year-olds would be complete without a lolly shop – an essential town landmark that added a sweet splash of colour and excitement.
Each building was thoughtfully constructed based on data collected through community surveys, providing students with a hands-on experience in data collection, graphing and civic planning.

To attract residents to the town, the girls wrote and recorded a podcast promoting their building. Visitors could listen in by scanning QR codes placed around the town, adding a modern and interactive twist to the experience.
The grand opening of Smagstown was a special event attended by students, teachers and the Head of Junior School, Mrs Helen Adams, who had the honour of cutting the ribbon to officially declare the town open.
Parents and relatives were also invited to tour the town and were delighted by the creativity, effort and learning on display. Our Year 4s also proudly guided younger students through their town, sharing what they had built and learned. It was a beautiful moment of leadership, curiosity and collaboration.
This integrated project brought together multiple areas of learning, including local government studies, data analysis and persuasive writing, and showcased the incredible things our students can achieve when they work together with purpose and imagination.
