Wellbeing and Belonging

Wellbeing, belonging and identity are fundamental to learning. We create a supportive environment where children feel known, valued and connected. We believe that when students develop confidence, resilience and positive relationships, they are better equipped to engage in learning and thrive both within and beyond the classroom.

The RULER Approach

As a RULER School, St Mary’s is committed to fostering emotional intelligence and wellbeing through an evidence-based approach developed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.

This method helps students develop these skills through consistent language, practices and learning experiences. Students build self-awareness, strengthen relationships and develop the confidence to navigate challenges positively.

By embedding emotional intelligence into everyday learning, we support students to develop empathy, resilience and a strong sense of belonging, recognising that wellbeing underpins both learning and personal growth.

Wellbeing in the Early Years

The Early Years provide an important foundation for emotional development, social growth and self-understanding. Our educators intentionally support students in building a positive sense of self, developing healthy relationships and navigating challenges with confidence.

Emotional Intelligence

Students are supported in recognising, understanding and regulating their emotions. Through daily interactions and explicit teaching, children develop empathy, self-awareness and the skills needed to build positive relationships with others.

Building Resilience

We encourage students to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and develop a growth mindset. By fostering independence, perseverance and problem-solving skills, we help children build resilience and confidence in their ability to learn and grow.
