Star Geography students put St Mary’s on the map

Outstanding results in this year’s Australian Geography Competition have seen St Mary’s once again recognised as the highest-achieving school in Western Australia. Competing against more than 47,000 students from over 600 schools across the country, our students achieved exceptional success.

Several of our students achieved impressive individual results, including Ananya (Year 7), Thandeka (Year 8) and Jasmin (Year 8), who were all placed in the top 1% of students nationally. An outstanding accomplishment in what is a highly competitive field.

Year 11 students Cate and Amelie were recognised among the highest-scoring students in the State. Amelie’s success has also earned her selection to represent Western Australia at the Geography Big Week Out, to be held in September. Following this event, students will be selected for the Australian team to compete at the 2027 International Geography Olympiad in Jelgava, Latvia.

Special congratulations go to Ayla in Year 12, who was the top-performing student in the State.

Geography plays a vital role in developing students’ understanding of the world around them and their place within it. Through the study of geographical concepts, students build critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of global challenges and opportunities. It is incredibly rewarding to see so many of our students excel in this prestigious competition, and we congratulate all participants on their outstanding achievements.

About the Australian Geography Competition

The Australian Geography Competition is delivered online and challenges students to apply both their geographical knowledge and skills. Participants have 30 minutes to complete a series of multiple-choice and cloze questions based on the Australian Curriculum. The competition is designed to test students’ understanding of geographical concepts, as well as their ability to interpret and analyse information.
